Monte Carlo Simulation Excel

If you are searching the Word Wide Web for “Monte Carlo Excel” you probably already know or have a general idea of how Monte Carlo Simulations work. The user typically has one or more variables with known probability distributions as well as a transfer function (basically an equation) to translate these input variables into the desired output variable. The goal in a Monte Carlo Simulation is to randomly retrieve a value for each of the input variables according to their probability distribution. Do this over and over multiple times (1k, 100k, 500k, 1 million times, and so on) and you can now understand what your output distribution (and statistics) will look like in the limit as the number of iterations go to infinity.

Monte Carlo Simulations can be performed in a number of different software tools including Python, R, MATLAB, JMP, and many more. However, from my engineering experience, there is a broad audience of Excel users who would like to do this right within the familiar excel environment and without the need to code.  It is for this reason that I created my Free Excel Monte Carlo Simulator. This is a simple to use Excel Workbook where the user can perform Monte Carlo Simulations and use the results in any way they wish within Excel.

Speed Test Windows 8

I just downloaded Network Speed Test for Windows 8. This free app brought to us by Microsoft Research, allow us to test the download, upload, and the network delay of the current internet connection. This app is very easy to use, and it has a great design. The app also keeps a result history for easy network speed comparisons over time.

Android Studio

A few days ago Google announced the release of Android Studio, an integrated development environment (IDE) for android. The software is intended to provide developers the tools needed for app development and debugging. I did have a chance to use the software and so far, it seems like a great tool. Here are some shots:

Accelerometer App for Android

Here is a great free app for android users. Accelerometer Monitor is an  android app that uses the accelerometer sensor in your smart phone to generate a plot of acceleration vs. time. Since smart phones have a 3-axis accelerometer, the app provides you with 3 components of acceleration (x, y, and z direction). I have been using this app for measuring vibrations for a few days and it works great. In my phone, the app collects data at a rate of approximately 15 Hz (although the sampling rate is not constant and it varies slightly from point to point).

A very useful feature is that this app allows you to save the data directly to the SD card memory in the phone inside a folder named “accData”.  In addition to the 3 components of acceleration and a differential time stamp at each data point, the saved data contains information about the starting and ending date and time, the resolution of your accelerometer sensor, the type of accelerometer sensor, and the range of the sensor. For example, in my phone, the resolution of my sensor is 0.01197 m/s^2 and acceleration range is +/-19.6 m/s^2.

You can  use your favorite data processing software to extract and visualize your data after extracting the file from your phone. For example, here is a Microsoft Office Excel plot of a set of data that I took after shaking my phone by hand in x (left to right), then y (forward and backward), and finally z (up and down) directions.

This app seems to be in Google Play under two different names since there is another identical app named Vibration Monitoring. Both of these apps are made by Mobile Tools.

As mentioned in the overview section of these apps, uses for the app includes:

“-shows vibrations in real time
- saves vibration data into SD card (*zip file also supported)
- provides configurable sound alarm that may be used to:
- detect the earthquakes when you sleep
- detect if somebody opens the door when you sleep“

Very useful app. If you have need for such a measurement, I recommend you check this app out.

ForceEffect for Android

ForceEffect By Autodesk

Here is another great app for your Iphone, Ipod Touch, or Ipad. ForceEffect is a FREE application developed by Autodesk that performs static force calculations (Yes, free-body-diagrams included).

This application is great for engineers at all levels (and architects too!). A static problem carried out by hand can take a significant amount of time. For instance, look at the following example:

Maple Player for iPad

Here is a great app for your iPad. Maple Player for iPad is a FREE app that allows viewing and interacting with documents created on desktop Maple. This app basically brings the power of Maple computing to your mobile device. At this moment, the available documents in the app are somewhat limited and restricted to only those provided by Maple Player. However, the possibilities in the future could be endless especially if you could develop and use your own desktop Maple documents on your mobile device. Great work MapleSoft.
